SECOND WORLD
SECOND WORLD tells stories without words. The music blends jazz, new age, and electronic influences, transporting the listener to a unique and sophisticated musical landscape. SECOND WORLD is an ongoing musical project by electric bassist ERROLL ZASTRE, based in Edmonton, Canada. Every sound in all the original compositions is played or programmed by Erroll on an array of drum machines, keyboards, and 5-string electric basses.
To get the guitar-like tones in performance, Erroll uses a 5-string bass tuned higher than normal. Melodies, chords, and bass lines can all be covered using this approach. This was inspired by the great electric bassist Steve Swallow. Beyond the bass and guitar sounds, a world of new timbres are accessible using the Roland GK-8 MIDI pickup.
As of December 2009, there are two recordings available from SECOND WORLD:
VIEWPOINT is the debut CD from SECOND WORLD, released in 2004. Influenced by the concepts developed by such musicians such as Mike Oldfield and Vangelis, SECOND WORLD single-handedly fuses jazz and new age into a fresh vision. The primary voice here is the sweet, guitar-like tones of the five-string electric bass.
BIG WEATHER is the follow up to the CD “Viewpoint” released in 2006. It contains ten original compositions that explore a spectrum of styles. Many of the compositions are loosely based around the concept of weather in its many forms.
